What is the required in service testing for engines in service for yearly certifications? You must perform an annual safety inspection of the chassis. You must perform annual inspections of the aerial device, up to but not including the five year Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). However, after the first or second five year aerial NDT inspection testing, it is my recommendation to perform a five year inspection as wear and tear becomes accelerated as time and mileage accumulate. Remember that you must also maintain the chassis to each component’s manufacturer’s recommendations. If the apparatus has a tank and pump, the pump must be test... Read More...

Brad Maness | 04/23/2012

If your department is like mine, the decreasing amount of resources available for extrication training has hampered adequately preparing our members for what they may encounter on our streets and highways. With our struggling economy and with the price of metal increasing, finding junk cars, buses, etc. has become a serious challenge. In the extrication arena, firefighters simply can’t watch a video or simulate the extrication sequence and expect to be proficient when the simple door pop doesn’t work. Although our departments may go some time before putting the tools to work for an actual emergency, we must constantly prepare for the wo... Read More...

RESCUE EQUIPMENT: Rigging elevated pulley systems from the ground

Bob Twomey | 04/23/2012

During your years in the rescue service, have you ever had to get a single or double sheave pulley system elevated and secured above the ground in order to perform a rescue, when you could not easily reach that elevated spot to place the pulley? Such a rescue could easily be encountered if you have to place an elevated pulley system above an injured tree trimmer, or above a pilot in his wreckage in the plane that crash-landed in a tree top, or even above a person stranded off the side of a building, bridge, water tank or whatever. Man versus Machine: Vehicle and Machine Rescue

Ed Henry | 04/23/2012

The Man versus Machine calls are the type that many fire service and EMS professionals will never respond to in their career. They may not even know what they are, let alone even be a part of this type of technical rescue. These calls are classified under N.F.P.A. 1670; the basic course heading is “Vehicle and Machine Rescue” and some classes may even be titled “Farm Medic,” for overturned farm machines with operator entrapment. Alternatives for purchasing fire apparatus

Daniel J. Cimini | 04/23/2012

Several articles ago I mentioned the option of leasing apparatus. With apparatus prices continuing to go up and up, it’s becoming more difficult for municipalities, cities, and fire departments to purchase new apparatus. An engine can cost $350,000 to $500,000, and an aerial can easily reach $1 million, with the prices continuing to escalate we have to look at a different purchasing approach that reduces the pain of the purchase.
